Northeast Columbia will welcome a new addition in the new year: a state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit. Matthew Medley, chief operating officer for the MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center Northeast, said it opens Jan. 1. “We partnered with the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and their expertise to create an MUSC world-class experience right here in the Midlands.”

Medley said the new unit, near the Columbia suburb of Blythewood, was designed with families’ comfort in mind. “We have what I would consider the largest delivery suites in the area, in terms of space, for a mother to give birth and either a spouse or a family member or family advocate to stay in the room and be a part of that process.”

There will be four mother/baby delivery suites, an operating room, eight postpartum rooms and a newborn nursery supported by state- of-the-art infrastructure.

Medley said it all adds up to show MUSC Health’s commitment throughout the Midlands. “We constantly evaluate the needs of our community and bring new, innovative services to people right where they are. The projected growth in Northeast Columbia provided a unique opportunity to bring in labor and delivery services. We will be the only providers in the Northeast community with a comprehensive OB delivery suite.”

The Northeast community is one of the fastest growing areas in the state, with several businesses bringing in headquarters and operations. Medley said the projected population growth by 2026 is 6.5%.

With that in mind, Medley said the labor and delivery unit will serve people throughout the Midlands with multiple obstetricians and other experts on hand to help deliver babies as safely as possible.

“MUSC Northeast is committed to delivering a unique experience through our care team members, facilities and technology. We are excited to welcome an expectant mother and honored to share these moments with family,” Medley said.

“This is an incredible place to be. It’s a special community and environment and we are so excited to serve and meet the needs of Northeast Columbia and the Midlands.”
