Kelly Richey joined the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital Fund (CHF) Advisory Board in 2021, during the height of the pandemic when meetings were still virtual. She was introduced by Kathy Cole, MUSC’s first lady and wife of MUSC President David J. Cole, M.D., FACS, who recognized Kelly’s previous volunteer work with the hospital and knew she would be a perfect fit for the advisory group.

A commitment to helping children

Kelly’s journey to the board is rooted in her deep commitment to supporting children and families. "I had volunteered for many years at the children’s hospital through Happy Wheels," Kelly shared. Happy Wheels delivers new toys and books to children staying in the hospital. After stepping away from Happy Wheels, Kelly sought another way to give back, which led her to become involved with Hooked on Miracles, the rebranded version of the long-running Fishing for Miracles tournament.

Hooked on Miracles: Continuing a legacy of giving

Though Kelly wasn’t the original founder of Fishing for Miracles, she played a pivotal role in rebranding it to Hooked on Miracles in 2019. The event, founded by Dan Muckenfuss over 25 years ago, was kept alive by Kelly and Dan’s close friends after his passing. Under its new name, the tournament has raised an impressive $650,000 for children in need.

"My favorite part of Hooked on Miracles is seeing the joy and excitement of the kids and families we help," Kelly said. "The fishing day is always a highlight, giving these children a special moment of happiness."

Serving on the board

In addition to her role on the board, Kelly has recently joined the special events committee, where she collaborates with fellow board members to plan and support events that raise essential funds for the hospital and its programs.

What Kelly loves about the CHF Advisory Board

Kelly’s passion for the CHF Advisory Board runs deep. "I enjoy being part of a group that makes such a meaningful impact on children and their families. It's incredibly rewarding to see our efforts make a difference." She also values the opportunity to learn from inspiring speakers at board meetings and appreciates the strong sense of community among those dedicated to giving back.

Achievements and contributions

Kelly has found her work on the CHF Advisory Board to be immensely fulfilling. "Serving on the board allows me to raise funds that directly help children and families," she said, taking pride in the tangible impact of the events she’s involved with.

Looking ahead

Kelly remains focused on growing the Hooked on Miracles event each year. "We work hard to expand the event and attract more sponsors. Our goal is to raise even more funds while continuing to bring joy to the kids and families we serve."

Kelly’s dedication to the Children’s Hospital Fund Advisory Board and Hooked on Miracles highlights her unwavering belief in the power of community and philanthropy. Whether through her work on the board or with the event, Kelly is making a meaningful impact, one child at a time.

Fun fact: When Kelly isn’t organizing events or supporting the CHF Advisory Board, she enjoys spending time with her family and continuing her philanthropic work in the community.
