Board Member DeWitt ZempDeWitt Zemp’s deep-rooted connection to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and his dedication to supporting his community have made him a valued member of the Children’s Hospital Fund (CHF) Advisory Board. A passionate advocate for children’s health, DeWitt’s journey to the board began long before his official appointment in 2021.

A lifelong connection to MUSC

DeWitt’s relationship with MUSC and the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is deeply personal. Growing up with a father who was a doctor at MUSC, he often spent weekends roaming the hallways of the former children’s hospital on Ashley Avenue. His family also formed close friendships with the family of Charles P. Darby Jr., M.D., who was instrumental in establishing the children’s hospital. Darby also became his pediatrician.

“The MUSC family is my family,” DeWitt said, reflecting on this 56-year-long bond.

It was not just his personal ties that motivated him to join the CHF Advisory Board, though. A strong sense of community and a desire to give back also guided his decision.

“To those who much is given, much is required,” he shared, referencing a scripture that has inspired his philanthropic endeavors.

In 2020, his desire to give back grew exponentially after his life was saved at MUSC and his daughter received care at the children’s hospital.

Looking to the future

DeWitt’s legacy on the board is defined by his dedication to elevating the hospital’s national reputation and securing its future. Leveraging his connections in the state legislature and U.S. Congress, he aims to raise awareness of the hospital’s exceptional medical achievements. His ultimate goal is to position Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital as the nation’s top children’s hospital.

The joy of serving

What DeWitt values most about his role on the board is the collective commitment to improving the health and well-being of children.

“The focus is on uniting a community of professionals around an important and incredibly worthwhile effort – enhancing the medical health priorities for our most vital asset: our children,” he explained.

It is this shared mission that makes his involvement both fulfilling and meaningful.

A vision for growth

One of DeWitt’s most impactful board contributions has been the creation of the Legislative Christmas Dinner, an event that brings together board members, trustees and legislators to highlight the hospital’s priorities and secure legislative support for crucial health initiatives.

“Our primary goal is to raise funds to support the hospital’s priorities,” DeWitt said, underscoring the importance of community engagement in ensuring the hospital’s continued success.
Looking ahead, DeWitt envisions the event growing into a cherished tradition, expanding in both size and influence each year.

“My hope is that this becomes an annual gathering that not only strengthens relationships but also plays a key role in funding vital children’s health initiatives,” he shared.

A commitment to golf and giving

Another highlight of DeWitt’s year is the Bulls Bay Golf event, organized by his fellow board member and co-chair, Charles Darby IV. DeWitt eagerly looks forward to participating in what he calls “the finest golf tournament in the Charleston area” and is dedicated to supporting its continued success for years to come.

Through his service on the board, DeWitt is leaving a lasting legacy of commitment to children’s health. His passion for the mission, deep ties to MUSC and dedication to the community make him an invaluable asset to the Children’s Hospital Fund.
