From one lunch to a lifetime of impact

For over two decades, Buddy Morgan has been a steadfast advocate and generous supporter of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, serving on the Children’s Hospital Fund Advisory Board since 2001. His journey began with a lunch invitation from longtime friends Dr. Charles P. Darby Jr., businessman and longtime MUSC Children’s Health supporter Tommy Baker, and Barbara Rivers, then director of development at MUSC Children’s Health.

“They asked if I would consider lending my skills in visual media and television to help tell the hospital’s story,” Buddy said. “Without hesitation, I said yes.”

That yes turned into decades of support.

Turning storytelling into lifesaving support

A veteran television executive and award-winning children’s educational TV producer, Buddy has created programming that has aired on major networks and in more than 90 countries worldwide. He’s earned 37 Emmy Awards, but for him, the most meaningful work has been at home in Charleston.

“Dr. Darby and Tommy Baker believed my storytelling could stir emotions, inspire donors, and help save lives,” he said. “That was a mission I couldn’t walk away from.”

A personal connection to the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital

While Buddy brings professional expertise to the board, his commitment is deeply personal.

“My wife Lissy and I have four healthy grandchildren, all born at Shawn Jenkins,” he said. “Every time my grandkids pass that building, they say, ‘I was born there!’”

That simple phrase carries deep meaning for Buddy. Over the years, he’s seen loved ones and countless families place their trust in the hospital’s care.

“You don’t always want to be in this building,” he said. “But you’re always glad it’s there – ready with capable, loving, open arms.”

Now, the next generation gives too

Buddy’s son, Dillon, recently joined the advisory board.

“Dillon is the most creative and kindest man I know,” Buddy said. “Seeing him bring his talents to this board is something else entirely.”

Buddy has focused on elevating fundraising and entertainment at the annual Bulls Bay Golf Tournament. He’s also passionate about supporting pediatric medical research.

“Dr. Darby taught us that the breakthroughs of today stand on the research of yesterday,” he said. “It’s not flashy, but it’s essential. We owe it to future generations.”

More than money: A broader definition of giving

For Buddy, giving is rooted in gratitude, responsibility and hope. And it’s more than giving money.

“Not all gifts are financial,” he said. “Some people give their time, their creativity, their voice. I’ve been fortunate to use my skills in media and storytelling to support a mission I care deeply about.”

Whether through producing meaningful stories or serving on the board, Buddy has used his talents to amplify the hospital’s mission and bring hope to families.

“There’s nothing more heartbreaking than a doctor or nurse feeling helpless with a sick child. If I can raise funds – or inspire others to give – so those kids have a fighting chance, that’s a calling worth answering.”

And for 24 years – and counting – Buddy has answered that call with compassion and creativity.
