Rusty and Deborah Streetman: A decade of dedication to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital

Rusty and Deborah Streetman have been steadfast supporters of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital, bringing their dedication, passion and invaluable experience to the Children’s Hospital Fund Advisory Board. Their shared commitment to the hospital’s mission makes them an inspiring husband-and-wife team.

A Decade of Commitment

Rusty has served on the advisory board since 2014. While Deborah was officially elected to the board in 2023, she has been actively involved since Rusty’s appointment, attending every advisory board meeting. As a retired pediatric radiology coordinator at MUSC Children’s Hospital, Deborah’s experience has given her a unique perspective and deep passion for pediatrics. Her expertise in pediatric radiology has further strengthened her connection to the hospital’s mission.

Significant contributions to MUSC Children’s Hospital

Rusty has made significant contributions, serving five years on the development committee and dedicating two years to the Bulls Bay Golf Tournament Committee. Deborah joined the development committee in 2023 and continues to serve alongside Rusty, supporting the hospital’s outreach and fundraising efforts.

“Our journey with the children’s hospital began when Rusty was elected to the board in 2014,” Deborah said. “At the time, Rusty was the vice president of store operations for BI-LO Supermarkets and had a close relationship with the late Julian Smith, longtime race director for the Cooper River Bridge Run (CRBR).”

Rusty played a key role in BI-LO becoming the title sponsor for the CRBR, strengthening the partnership between the hospital and the race. This connection deepened the Streetmans’ involvement with the advisory board.

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

“We are incredibly proud to be part of the children’s hospital and the progress it has made over the past decade,” Rusty said. “Our legacy is one of continued commitment to the hospital – through time, volunteerism, fundraising and personal contributions.”

The Streetmans are dedicated to ensuring the hospital remains one of the nation’s best for pediatric care and strive to leave a lasting impact on children’s lives.

A Husband-and-Wife Team

Being involved as a husband-and-wife team has been rewarding and unique. It has given Rusty and Deborah the opportunity to plan and discuss the hospital’s activities together.

“We’ve been proud to contribute to the fundraising efforts and the expansion of the hospital,” Deborah said. “We participated in many ‘hard hat’ tours during the hospital’s construction, and when the hospital officially opened, we volunteered to help with the transition.”

One of the most unforgettable moments for the Streetmans was assisting with the move from the former children’s hospital on Ashley Avenue to the new building on McClennan Banks Drive. That experience reinforced their belief in the hospital’s mission of “Changing What’s Possible” in world-class pediatric care.

Rusty and Deborah’s unwavering dedication to the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital continues to make a meaningful impact. Their efforts on the advisory board leave a legacy that will inspire future generations.

Bulls Bay Golf Tournament: a Favorite Event

“The Bulls Bay Golf Tournament and Fundraiser is, without a doubt, our favorite event of the year,” Rusty said. “Whether volunteering or sponsoring a team, we’ve enjoyed being part of this special day for many years.”

For the Streetmans, Bulls Bay is always a fun and relaxing day on the golf course, followed by an exciting evening with other engaged patrons.

“The camaraderie and shared sense of purpose make it an event we look forward to year after year,” Deborah said.
