Our pediatricians are certified as subspecialists in child abuse care by the American Board of Pediatrics. That means they understand the nuances of helping children recover from abuse, whether the mistreatment has been physical, sexual or emotional, or involves neglect.
The MUSC Children’s Health Child Abuse program is recognized throughout the community for its expertise. It provides consultation for clinics at MUSC Health in downtown Charleston as well as MUSC Health outreach clinics, the Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center and the Dorchester Children’s Center. Our doctors and nurses also work with abused children in the emergency department and continue to care for them in follow up.
In addition to three certified child abuse pediatricians, one board-eligible child abuse pediatrician, and one emeritus faculty member, we have five specially-trained nurse practitioners and six pediatric nurses trained in sexual assault evidence collection. We provide consultation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
