Advanced Diagnostic Imaging

As an AIUM accredited ultrasound unit the Advanced Fetal Care Center is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. Highly trained perinatal, fetal echocardiographic sonographers and radiologist with experience in interpreting prenatal fetal MRIs.

Types of Diagnostic Testing

Fetal Ultrasound

  • Detailed, high resolution fetal ultrasounds are a safe noninvasive imaging technology that uses high frequency sound waves to assess fetal growth and development. Advanced Fetal Care MUSC ultrasound machines are higher frequency than most offices providing the most detail resolution possible. Our sonographers are trained in advanced technique to be able to use 3-D and 4-D settings to best evaluate fetal anomalies.
  • These highly detailed ultrasounds tend to take longer than traditional exams as the sonographers are trained to look at every fine detail of your baby. Including every finger, toe, facial feature, eyes, ears, and nose which are not typically examined on routine ultrasounds.
  • The ultrasounds are performed in a private room where up to two support people can join you.

Fetal Echocardiogram

  • This highly specialized imaging exam of your baby's heart is called a fetal echocardiogram or fetal echo. Advanced diagnostic ultrasound imaging technology, 2D, color Doppler, radiant flow, and spectral Doppler is utilized to obtain images of the heart, assessing anatomy, blood flow, and associated vascular and arterial connections. These detailed images capture the anatomic structure and function of your baby's heart and are viewed and interpreted by our pediatric cardiologists with advanced training in the fetal heart.

Fetal MRI

  • Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a specialized noninvasive imaging test that can provide supplemental information obtained from your fetal ultrasound.
  • MRIs are routinely preformed for patients of all ages as well as pregnant women. To date there is no indication that the use of MRI during pregnancy has any harmful effects.
