Handle With Care SC

The MUSC Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness is partnering with the Center for Disability Resources (CDR) located at the University of South Carolina on a statewide initiative called Handle With Care. This initiative provides a system for law enforcement and first responders to notify a child’s school when they have been exposed to trauma. Handle With Care (HWC) promotes partnerships between schools and communities aimed at ensuring that children who are exposed to trauma in their home or community receive the appropriate support needed to succeed despite the traumatic circumstances they may have endured.

The South Carolina Handle With Care Initiative supports children exposed to trauma by fostering a collaborative network between law enforcement, schools, and mental health providers. The goal is to create safe, supportive environments that help children heal and thrive, ultimately enabling academic success despite their experiences. With ongoing efforts in multiple counties, the program works to expand statewide, providing training, resources, and technical assistance to ensure seamless implementation and support for impacted children.

MUSC BCCW will work alongside the Statewide Team to support the implementation of HWC in the Lowcountry region. For more information, please visit the South Carolina Handle With Care website
